💬 In a few words:
Oh, sweetie, North and South Korea are getting into a dreadful submarine race! One's got a big new nuke boat, and the other is getting President Trump's blessing for theirs. Just imagine!
More details:
Oh, The Drama! Guess What Those Korean Countries Are Up To Now?
Well, I never! You won't believe the hullabaloo brewing over in Asia, specifically with those Koreas, bless their hearts. It seems they've both gone and decided that regular submarines just aren't exciting enough. Now, they're in a full-blown race to build nuclear-powered ones! Can you imagine?
First, we hear that North Korea, with their dear leader Kim Jong Un, unveiled a truly enormous "strategic guided missile submarine." It's an 8,700-ton monster, if you can believe it! They've been quiet about these things since 2021, but now they're just showing it off like a new grandchild. Kim says it's for defense, but then turns around and scolds South Korea for wanting their own. Honestly, the nerve!
My Goodness, The Shenanigans! What Are They Thinking?
Honestly, sweetie, it makes my old head spin. Back in my day, we worried about keeping our gardens weed-free, not who had the bigger underwater metal beast! These youngsters, they just love to stir the pot, don't they?
And South Korea, not to be outdone, quickly got the go-ahead from President Trump himself back in October. They've even started a whole government task force to make it happen. Apparently, they're talking about getting military-grade nuclear fuel from the U.S. now. Heavens to Betsy! It's like a game of "who can build it faster" but with terribly serious consequences.
"It’s all because America wants its allies to ‘shoulder more of their own security burden.’ Well, if that doesn't just sound like more trouble for everyone!"
So, What Exactly Is Going On With All These Underwater Contraptions?
Here’s the skinny, plain and simple. North Korea has been quite busy, not only with this new nuclear submarine but also testing submarine-launched missiles and even claiming to have a nuclear-capable torpedo. Their defense minister admits their old diesel subs just can't keep up.
Now, the U.S. is apparently expecting these new South Korean subs to do more than just watch North Korea. Admiral Daryl Caudle, from the U.S. Navy, practically said aloud that they expect these subs to help counter China. Oh, the plot thickens, doesn't it?
- South Korean President Lee Jae Myung even mentioned China in a chat with President Trump, hinting at tracking capabilities.
- But then his office quickly backtracked, saying he just meant submarines "near our waters toward the direction of the North and China." Talk about being diplomatic!
- Turns out, China is South Korea’s biggest trading partner, so they're tiptoeing around that like I do around broken china.
Honestly, I Just Can't Even With All This Modern Mayhem!
It seems everyone is worried sick about China's growing influence, even Japan is thinking about nuclear subs now! And what about our dear old U.S. of A.? Some folks are whispering that America is shifting its defense focus closer to home, making allies wonder if they can really count on Uncle Sam anymore.
A recent poll found that less than half of Koreans believe the U.S. would even use nuclear weapons if North Korea attacked. And guess what? A majority of South Koreans are now saying they support nuclear armament themselves, even if it means sanctions!
One professor, Kim Heungkyu, says these nuclear submarines could be an "entry point toward a much bigger goal" of full nuclear armament for South Korea. Well, I never! It sounds like a recipe for disaster if you ask me. All this talk of nuclear this and nuclear that. It's enough to make a grandma need a very strong cup of tea and a slice of apple pie just to cope!
Grandma's waiting on your verdict
Pour dear Grandma another cup by tapping how this gossip feels. She can't finish her knitting until you whisper your take.
